Smithsonian Magazine posted an interesting article this week about the way the paperback novel became a popular reading format. A British publishing executive was looking for something to read other than magazines or pulp fiction during a train ride and had a brainstorm to bring "quality" reading to the masses at an affordable price:
He then acquired the rights to ten reprints of serious literary titles and went knocking on non-bookstore doors. When Woolworth’s placed an order for 63,500 copies, Lane realized he had a viable financial model.
Lane’s paperbacks were cheap. They cost sixpence, or two and a half pounds, the same as ten cigarettes, the publisher touted. Volume was key to profitability; Penguin had to sell 17,000 copies of each book to brea...

We've got less than an hour to go before we embark on another whimsical, wild storytelling journey with the help of #1 New York Times Bestselling author Meg Cabot (@megcabot) and the Twitterverse!
Meg will tweet the tantalizing first line at Noon EST and we'll immediately retweet it! Then you tweet a possible second line of the story, like this:
@BBCAA Your Tweet Here #bbcawdio
And then we're off! We'll select and retweet the lines that push the story forward in new and interesting directions at @BBCAA, so follow our account to keep up-to-the-minute on all the twists and turns. We'll try to shape a narrative out of all your creative ideas as quickly and spontaneously as possible. It will be messy and chaotic and maybe we'll go off in some crazy directions...

Thanks for all your contributions, Twitterverse. I think an interesting story is developing. Here's the line-by-line breakdown for scene 5. (Remember to read from the bottom up.)
An electric buzz skittered up her flesh. The acrid smell of ozone bit into her nose as Sam was engulfed by darkness. (via terencewest)
"NO!" the woman screamed. Everything began swirling around Sam like she was on an amusement park ride. #bbcawdio (via dstieglitz313)
Now was not the time to worry about what would happen - she had to just do it! One, two, three...#bbcawdio (vai ange1ina)
Somehow she knew if she gave up the egg, she'd never get home. Finnegan had said to rub the stone three times... #bbcawdio (via techtigger)

Ok, here's the line-by-line breakdown from Scene 4 of our epic tale. Remember to read from the bottom up.
Had she told him her name? Sam wondered. She couldn't recall but pushed the thought aside. There was a staircase waiting. (via nettsche)
Sam sighed. What was that supposed to mean? Why did everyone here have to speak in riddles? #bbcawdio (via mackenzie_finch)
"Just remember, lass, the most important doors are the hardest ones to find," Finnigan said before he disappeared. #bbcawdio (via selorian)
"How do you know my name?!" Sam asked, startled. #bbcawdio (via loupok)
"I best get 'round back with this delivery before Her Excellency has m' head, and you best start climbing, young Sam." (via Taragel)

We're just about to launch Day 2 of the #bbawdio novel and here's a quick summary of the story so far. We've been loving all of your creative contributions!
First line:
Sam was brushing her hair when the girl in the mirror put down the hairbrush, smiled & said, “We don't love you anymore.” (Posted by Neil Gaiman, @neilhimself)
Scene 1:
The girl in the mirror speaks ominously to Sam of a promise once made to “them.” Sam tries desperately to remember and a memory flickers of a devil’s bargain she once made—the same day her brother disappeared. Then everything fades as Sam slips through the mirror into another world.
Scene 2:
Sam wakes up in darkness on the other side of the glass. She’s only able to look on in horror while her m...

Good job everyone! We'll soldier on to Scene 3 and then post an update at the end of the day with summary of the story so far!
Here's line-by-line breakdown of Scene 2 (read from the bottom up):
1. The puppet smiled. A far more human smile, and more disturbing for that. "Well. Shall we begin, my dear?" #bbcawdio (via mackenzie_finch)
"Nothing. Or Everything. It all depends on how you play the game." #bbcawdio (via karie122)
Terrified, Sam turned back towards the mirror, "What will she do? What will she do to them?" #bbcawdio (via hazeltwilight)
"The answer is before you. But ask yourself: What will happen if SHE is THERE too long?" #bbcawdio (via anglotastic)
"But what does that mean? What will happen i...

Last Week, BBCAA's Managing Editor Vikki Warner let her freak flag fly with the cast and creators of The Mighty Boosh, on their US tour. After New York, they headed out West and tomorrow night they'll be signing at Amoeba Records in Los Angeles (see our calendar for more details).
BBCAA basks in the Brilliance of the Boosh
Last week, on a routine visit to our New York offices, I was stunned to find out that my favorite comedy duo, The Mighty Boosh, were in town to promote the DVD release of all three seasons of their zoo-tastic show—the strangest and funniest thing ever to cross my television screen. A signing? Great! A “secret” show, at which they would perform and DJ for their obsessive fans? Heavenly.
Frantically collecting our audiobooks ...

It's been a busy few days for the BBCAA team as we took in the sights and sounds of the Audio Publishers Association Conference (APAC) and Book Expo America (BEA) in the Big Apple.
Thursday was the annual APAC to discuss the future of the audiobook industry. Plenty of topics were discussed in the publishers and narrators tracks including the embracing of new formats (esp. digital download), the pricing scheme of audiobooks, ways to reduce costs but still ensure quality in recordings, new developments like the Kindle's text-to-speech feature, productive ways to market in a budget-challenged economy, and many more. Several attendees lauded the keynote speaker Joshua Cooper Ramo's talk on new business models (his book, The Age of th...

Here at BBC Audiobooks America we see a lot of books and manuscript submisssions that aren’t quite right for an audio adaptation. It can often be a thin line, a finely nuanced distinction indeed, that separates those stories ideal for recording from those that are not.
But sometimes? Not so much.
Editorial Director Jeffrey Golick presents here a handful of good reasons why your precious pearls of wisdom may not make the cut as an audiobook.
